As the 2025–26 Premier League season approaches, clubs are actively strengthening their squads to enhance their competitive edge.
Newcastle United have secured the loan signing of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton for the upcoming season. The 27-year-old England international, who ranked second in saves in the Premier League last season with 125, reunites with manager Eddie Howe, under whom he previously played at Bournemouth. Ramsdale joined Southampton from Arsenal in 2024 after losing his starting position to David Raya and had previously contributed to Arsenal’s 2022–23 Premier League runner-up finish. Despite his efforts, Ramsdale endured relegation with Southampton last season—his third Premier League relegation after stints with Bournemouth and Sheffield United . Newcastle, who finished fifth last season and qualified for the Champions League, will start the new league campaign on August 16 against Aston Villa.
In a significant development, Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min announced he will leave the club this summer, ending a ten-year tenure. The 33-year-old forward joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and played a pivotal role in securing the club’s first major trophy in 17 years—the 2025 Europa League win over Manchester United. Son, who is contracted until 2026, did not reveal his next club, though reports suggest a move to MLS side Los Angeles FC. In a press conference before a friendly in Seoul, Son described the decision to leave as one of the toughest in his career, expressing pride in his decade-long commitment and achievements at the club. He played 454 games and scored 173 goals, including winning the 2021–22 Premier League Golden Boot. Spurs manager Thomas Frank acknowledged Son as a club legend and commended the timing of his departure following a major victory.
Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka has signed a three-year contract with newly-promoted Premier League club Sunderland, marking his return to the English top flight after two years at Bayer Leverkusen. The 32-year-old previously spent seven years at Arsenal, making 225 appearances and winning two FA Cups. During his debut season at Leverkusen, Xhaka won the Bundesliga and reached the Europa League final. Despite Leverkusen manager Erik ten Hag recently deeming him too vital to lose, Sunderland secured the transfer, reportedly for £17.3 million . Expressing enthusiasm about the move, Xhaka cited the club’s energy and mentality as major draws. Sunderland will kick off their league campaign at home against West Ham United on August 16.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has publicly urged club officials to retain star midfielder Eberechi Eze amid strong interest from Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has targeted Eze following Arsenal's recent acquisition of Viktor Gyokeres. Eze, who played a decisive role in Palace's FA Cup final victory over Manchester City and recorded 14 goals and 11 assists last season, is reportedly valued at £55 million, with a release clause near £70 million. Glasner expressed frustration over the club's inactivity in the transfer window, noting that only two signings—Borna Sosa and Walter Benitez—have been made for a modest £2 million. The manager warned that selling Eze could significantly weaken the squad, which currently includes just 17 outfield players. Palace are also keen to retain club captain Marc Guehi, who is attracting interest from several Premier League sides. Despite Arsenal having already spent nearly £200 million this transfer window, they may still pursue a deal for Eze before the deadline.
A supercomputer prediction for the 2025/26 Premier League season suggests Liverpool will fall short in retaining their title, finishing third behind Manchester City and Arsenal. Despite Liverpool’s substantial summer investments in players like Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong, and a possible move for Alexander Isak, the AI model forecasts a decline from their previous triumph. Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta, are expected to endure another painful second-place finish, while Manchester City are predicted to secure the championship with 92 points. Chelsea, led by Enzo Maresca, are set to complete the top four, albeit 13 points behind City. Manchester United make a significant recovery, jumping from 15th to 5th to clinch a Europa League spot. Conversely, newly promoted teams Burnley, Sunderland, and Leeds United are all expected to be relegated again, with Leeds finishing last with just 28 points. The overall picture indicates competitive performances from established top clubs, while promoted teams struggle to maintain top-flight status for yet another year.
West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared by the Football Association of four alleged breaches of betting rules. The charges stemmed from accusations that Paqueta deliberately sought to receive yellow cards during four Premier League matches in 2022 and 2023 to influence the betting market for others' benefit. Following a hearing by an independent Regulatory Commission, it was determined that the charges were not proven. Paqueta had consistently denied the allegations. However, he still faces two separate charges related to alleged non-compliance with the FA’s investigation process, including failure to answer questions and provide required information.
As the new season approaches, these developments highlight the dynamic nature of the Premier League, with clubs making strategic moves to bolster their squads and prepare for the challenges ahead.
